When I was selected by Sunset Magazine to design the interiors of their annual Idea house in Ladera Ranch, I had no idea of the fun I was in for! The team at Sunset is like one big extended family and I think their un-official motto is work hard and play even harder! The architecture was to be classic Craftsman ~ but I was tasked to re-invent a sub-genre for the interiors that we called Contemporary Craftsman. I replaced the dark stained wood with glossy white paneled walls. Where traditional Craftsman tiles would have been used, I substituted glass mosaic tiles. A palette of seaside hues including cool ocean blues and warm beach sand replaced the traditional autumn tones. Modern lighting with clean minimal lines, again took the style to an unexpected place. The bones still read Craftsman ~ high paneled walls, intricately beamed ceilings, decorative wood inlays, but what set this property apart was the twist on the finishes. It was all about keeping the interiors light and airy with a contemporary flair. For the furnishings I selected classic styles, but updated them with fresh modern fabrics.
